Gift: Bridesmaids

Holy clutches and color blocking, Batman!

Not sure if these were from the bridesmaid’s personal collections, but I’d like to think these fantastic clutches were a gift from the bride herself.

Tips: How to Work with Your Make-up Artist + Elizabeth Arden Giveaway

Jeffrey Neal for Hoffmann Photographer

Make-up is a very important element for the ladies on their wedding day.  Even if you don’t want to go heavy, just the bare essentials will help add depth to a two-dimensional photo.

Elizabeth Arden has some great make-up basics that we are giving away!!!  Stay tuned next week for the deets on how to enter to win this set of Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Cream Blush – Pink ($24), Smoky Eyes Powder Pencil – Smoky Black ($16.50) and Double Density Volume Mascara – Black Brown ($19.50).

I was so lucky to have my cousin Cyrina, because she’s an amazing make-up artist and did mine and EVERYONE’S make-up on my wedding day.

Jeffrey Neal for Hoffmann Photographer

Here some extremely helpful tips from Cyrina about how to work with a make-up artist and what you need to know when it comes to wedding day make-up:

  • Have photos of what make-up looks you like.
  • Ask if the makeup artist uses anything waterproof to help with those wedding day tears that can ruin your makeup.  Especially if using lashes, which I highly recommend.  :)
  • Ask about staying for touch-ups after the ceremony, sometimes the artist may not mind staying for touch ups.  If not ask how much extra.  IT’s worth it, especially if you’ll be taking photos after.
  • If you are someone who does not wear makeup at all or very often, remember, it’s going to look like a lot of make-up on and maybe too much or too dark.  It’s ok, your make-up will be beautiful for your photos and it’ll last all night.
  • To go with above, if you like the natural look, again, have pictures and tell your make-up artist during the trial run.  Remind them on the day of that you prefer a natural glow look with subtleness.
  • Depending on how many people will be getting their makeup done, ask if there is an assistant or if they will be doing it all on their own . If its just one person, keep in mind that it will be a very early morning for the girls.
  • If on their own, make sure to get a time line from them. How long will they be spending on each girl. It’s good to get an estimated time and work out a small time line for the girls and artist.  It’s a good reminder of “we are on a time schedule and this I the time we need to be done.”
  • Lastly, don’t be afraid to tell the make artist what you like and don’t like. It’s your big day and you want to feel comfortable an happy.

For me, working with Cyrina was a breeze.  I trusted her as a vendor.  She asked to see my dress and I was able to share with her the overall look I was going for.  I LOVED my make-up and was also lucky enough to have her be there after the ceremony.  She quickly found me and did, surprisingly, only minor touch-ups after the floods came down during the ceremony.  (I didn’t think the rivers would come down that hard, but it did.)

She and her team are the best and you should hire her if you’re in the Northern California/Bay area.

The Toilet Paper Bride

Prepare to be amazed.

I had no idea there was even such a contest, but behold, I present you with the 7th Annual Toilet Paper from Cheap Chic Weddings.

First place winner Susan Brennan is from Orchard Lake, MI (Detroit)

Second place winner Laura Lee of Milpitas, CA (San Jose)

Third place winner Cynthia Richards of Marietta, GA (Atlanta)

Susan took home the Top Prize of $1,000.00 for her beautiful toilet paper gown creation. Inspired by nature. She used flowers and feathers and balanced the dress with pleats on the bodice. She used 4 rolls of Toilet Paper, hot glue, and packing tape.

Second place winner, Laura, wins $500 for her design and third place winner, Cynthia, wins $250 for her entry. Laura used 5 rolls of one-ply Toilet Paper, transparent duct tape, first aid tape and spray adhesive. Her friend Michelle helped her put the dress together. Cynthia used 20 rolls of Toilet Paper, Duct Tape, Hot Glue, Mod Podge Glue and Fabric Glue. Her 8 year old daughter Rainey helped her with her dress.

Could you even imagine making these?  Could you imagine if a bride actually wore one of these on their wedding day and it rained?!  (That was my first thought.  haha.)  Nonetheless, these dresses are GORGEOUS!!  I seriously can not believe they’re made of toilet paper.

I guess toilet paper is the new duct tape!

WDW pt. 3

(all photos in this post are by: Brandon Chan and Trisha Vo)

Since posting the Disney World Party Rock video, I have shown it to EVERYONE. The same few questions keep popping up, so I’m here to give you answers:

Q: Did you plan the video before going on the trip?
A: Yes, I brought the idea to everyone in the video and they loved it. The night I got in, I mapped out what I wanted to film, except we didn’t follow that at all. Most of the filming happened on the last day. The rest were funny moments that just happened.

Q: Was Teddy, that guy in the cut off, really sleeping?
A: Yes! He loves sleeping. That was one of the funny moments. Before waking him up, we knew we had to get it on film.

Q: How did you get the characters to jump?
A: I first asked them if they could dougie, but they shook their heads no, so we jumped instead. I don’t know how to dougie either, so it’s cool.

Q: What type of cameras were you using?
A: We had 3 Kodak Playsports and 2 Canon 60ds. The Playsport is waterproof and films in HD.  The Canon 60d were the cameras that filmed the best quality scenes aka the ones with the fuzzy background.

Q: Did you go anywhere else besides the Disney Parks?
A: No. We all took advantage of our Premier passes.  I used video footage that was taken in the 6 parks.  The video did not include our frequent outings to Earl of Sandwich, Disney Quest and free daily Ghiradelli chocolate square samplings at Downtown Disney.

Other facts:
The only time we had background music was when we filmed in the car. The shakey “ride” was our rental car.

It might seem like we were just filming to create a great home video on vacation, but we did enjoy lots of rides, attractions and food while the cameras weren’t rolling.  We made a video game at Epcot (play here), and got these sweet freeloader ride pictures!

There’s something satisfying about cashing in on delicious French pastries, instead of money, when making stupid bets.

One of my favorite rides Disneyland doesn’t have is Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom.

The trivia board at Sid Cahuenga’s One-Of-A-Kind Store at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was dominated by none other than team “Asian Persuasion”…yes, Tommy literally named our team “Asian Persuasion”.

I celebrated my birthday…with an abu hat.

The best time to go to Disneyworld as a passholder is when Disney is giving out free stuff to passholders.  Doesn’t matter what it is.  I’ll take 2.  In this case it was Star Tours lanyards, and yes, I got 2.

Last Orlando trip, Teddy’s signature was putting up a peace sign in every photo.  This time, it was an angry face.  I don’t know why.

Segways.

There was also lots of Monopoly Deal.  It was a great trip and bittersweet to come home.  One of the best parts was bringing home my customized rice krispy treat.

P.S. For all of you that are wondering, this is my last Disney World post for awhile now.

Melissa & Zubin (Part 2)

As I’ve said before, being able to spend the whole day with your friends on their wedding day is the best.  I love watching the stress come off their shoulders as Michelle and I do our thang.  Melissa and Zubin’s wedding, way back in October was no different.  We were back at the Luxe on Sunset.

On a typical day of coordination, ME&S comes to meet the bride when she’s getting her make-up done and the groom when he arrives at the ceremony location (it’s usually around the same time).

Look at Zubin grab hold of the woman he loves.  For the detail-oriented peeps, notice Melissa’s hair accessory is on the photographed side.

Grooms need to accessorize too.  Zubin wore purple socks to pay homage to his favorite basketball team, the LA Lakers.

Melissa and Zubin met through dodge ball.  Perfect use of props!

Erin Hearts Court not only shot the wedding, but they created the invitations!  Michelle also improvised with decor, provided by the bride, and instantly found a solution for photo frames without a built-in stand.

The couple honored Zubin’s Persian roots with a beautiful sofreye aghad.  They also fed each other honey during the ceremony.

A tip I learned from my wedding coordinator Lilly, was to look for ways to reuse your flowers.  The sweetheart table was adorned with bridemaids bouquets, with the bridal bouquet as the focal piece in this easy and cost efficient arrangement.

Melissa had these kind words to say about us:

“It was so great getting to work with Liz and Michelle. I don’t know what I would’ve done without them! They had great ideas and were willing to do whatever I needed done on the big day and leading up to it. These ladies are like having 5 maids of honor on speed dial. Ten hands organizing, decorating, calling, running, directing, hanging, cleaning and closing, while I didn’t worry about anything but how delicious our wedding cake was. Thanks ME&S!”

Thank you Melissa and Zubin for letting us be apart of your wedding day.
